When do the airlines really screw you on ticket prices?  It’s either when you’re in a hurry or when you need to find low cost airfare on a certain day, right?

Well, there’s a simple solution to both of these scenarios which can save you hundreds or even  thousands of dollars whenever you buy airfare.

It’s a little company called Airtech, and if you haven’t heard of them, you need to read on before you start shopping for low cost airfare online. Why? Because Airtech has some of the cheapest online airfares in existence on both domestic and international flights.

Searching multiple airfare price comparison websites is a must.  They often have the best travel deals and cheapest plane tickets. When you need to find more flexible airfare, go directly to the airline rather than the sites that compare airfare prices. Why? Because not only are the airlines able to be a little more flexible with their tickets, sometimes, if you’re lucky, you’ll find unadvertised airfare discounts.

When looking for low price airfare, a rare treat: There’s a new — well, newer — airline in town, and if you haven’t tried them, they’re awesome.

When most airplanes these days have been around for 20 years, with the carpet and internal decoration to prove it, it’s pretty refreshing to fly in a brand new plane.

Virgin America (not Virgin Atlantic) is a brand new airline (started in late 2007) with all new planes, and they’re dedicated to providing low cost airfare in America. So far, they really do the trick. Many times, I’ve found airfare through them which meets or beats any other carrier, especially for jaunts to or through San Francisco (their hub).

That’s right. Even better than the fact that they have some of the lowest price airfare I’ve seen, their planes are cool. And when I say cool, I really mean super cool.

The seats are wide and new and comfortable, and recline quite far. Every seat has a tv embedded in it with it’s own remote control which also doubles as a game controller and texting device. You can play games on it, watch maps of where you’re flying real-time, and of course watch TV or movies. You can also text other people on the plane by their seat number, which lets you keep in touch with your flying buddies if you’re separated, or try and make new friends.

And That Low Price Airfare Gets You Pretty Planes Too

Seriously. The airplanes actually look cool. With blue and pink lighting, and sci-fi looking decoration inside, it’s a fun, good looking plane ride. Oh, and for you laptop junkies, did I mention: free wi-fi on the plane?

Sure, the names are familiar. The jingles are stuck in your head. But what are the real differences between the top internet sources for finding the lowest airfare prices online? Which are the best? And which one is right for you?

You already know how to find low airfare prices, you just need to know where. So, let’s take a look at some of the most popular low airfare price comparison engines and bidding websites, and decide where our search for cheap flight tickets should start.

• The Not-So-Good: When naming your own low airfare price, you bid on ranges of flight times rather than actual flight times. This means that you won’t know what time you’re leaving until after your bid is accepted. If you end up with a late flight out and an early flight back, you could potentially lose a day at your destination.
• Best Airfare Prices for: Travelers who don’t mind keeping their travel arrangements a little bit loose. Also people who are going away for more than a weekend trip. And people who are leaving at the last minute

2. Travelocity – Choose Your Low Airfare Prices

Who? Travelocity is the second largest online travel agency for a reason. Compare airfare prices, and choose the flights you want. It doesn’t get easier than that. Watch my Travelocity trick.

• The Good: Travelocity can almost always find cheap flights the other guys miss, meaning you get better deals on average. Plus, there are no extra fees when booking for flights only. And if you find a lower airfare price than the one you booked, Travelocity will refund the difference. That’s a win-win.
• The Not-So-Good: Airline prices change often, so the prices you saw in an advertisement may not be the prices you see when you search the site.
• Best Airfare Prices for: Travelers who want to choose their flight times and details.

3. Expedia – Low Airfare Prices With A Full Package

Who? Expedia, a spinoff of Microsoft, is one of the oldest and biggest of the online travel price comparison sites. Super easy to use, and great package deals.

• The Good: If you’re looking for a hotel or a hotel and car rental to go with those low airfare prices, you can find some really great deals on travel packages at Expedia.
• The Not-So-Good: Even though you can find great deals on travel packages, you’ll find airfare prices by themselves tend to average higher on Expedia.
• Best Airfare Prices for: Travelers who want more choices in hotels, and travelers who are looking for a hotel and car rental in addition their cheap flight tickets.

4. Hotwire – Among the Lowest Airfare Prices, And Flexible Too

Who? Hotwire is another well-known discount travel website that offers some of the lowest price airfares and great vacation package deals.

• The Good: In testing, Hotwire’s airfare prices are almost always among the lowest. By checking a flexible date range up to 30 days, Hotwire can find you the lowest airfare prices within that time range. And with Trip Watcher, you’ll be notified when the ticket prices drop on trips you want to take.
• The Not-So-Good: Southwest Airlines is not among Hotwire’s airline choices, so you may miss some low cost airfare deals there. And, to get the best airfares, you’ll want to use the Hotwire Limited Rate, which can often mean very early or late departure times and multiple connections.
• Best Airfare Prices for: Travelers who can be a little flexible in their travel plans, and don’t mind letting Hotwire pick the airlines and flight times.

5. Orbitz – Low Airfare Prices With A Guarantee

Who? Created by Delta, Northwest, Continental, and United Airlines to compete with the major online travel websites, Orbitz offers discount airfare prices for these major airlines.

• The Good: With Orbitz Price Assurance, if another Orbitz customer books the same flight as you but pays a lower price airfare, you automatically get a refund check for the difference. Also, their TLC Traveler Update tool lets you keep tabs on current travel conditions, including how long the security line is, where to find the best parking, FAA postings, etc. And you can do it from your cell phone!
• The Not-So-Good: Orbitz can ding you with a number of fees, including a $25 non-refundable fee when you buy airline tickets by phone, a $30 service fee to change previously issued tickets, and a $50 fee to cancel a vacation package. And, even if you completely cancel your trip well ahead of time, airfare is not refundable.
• Best Airfare Prices for: Travelers who want to stay extremely informed about airport and travel conditions, and travelers who don’t want to have to hunt down cheaper deals themselves in order to get their airfare price adjusted downward.

6. Kayak – Low Airfare Prices From Everywhere

Who? Kayak is sort of the supergroup of airfare websites. Created by the co-founders of Orbitz, Travelocity, and Expedia, Kayak searches over 100 other airfare sites for the lowest airfare prices.

• The Good: Kayak features low airfares from discount airlines like Jet Blue, which you won’t find on other online travel sites. Kayak also lets you check and compare prices on airline websites directly, so you can sometimes avoid service fees by booking directly with the airline through Kayak.
• The Not-So-Good: If you’re looking for cheap international airfares, you’ll find a much better selection on other sites.
• Best Airfare Prices for: Travelers who want the greatest amount of choice when it comes to airfare prices, and travelers who want to compare prices from airlines and discount airlines directly.

If you can’t find low airfare prices now, you aren’t really trying
